All eyes are on the unfolding Russian invasion of Ukraine. And while the world watches in horror as the war affects the lives of millions of Ukrainians stuck in harm’s way, it’s still uncertain what the full extent of the economic fallout will be. One thing is certain; access to Ukrainian natural gas and coal will mean big changes for U.S. energy companies and consumers.

Attorney Joel Burcat has a deep love for Ukraine and it’s people; his grandparents emigrated to America from Ukraine and passed through Ellis Island in the 1920’s. Burcat sees both trouble and opportunity ahead.

“One of Putin’s major objectives in trying to take back Ukraine is to capture their abundant natural gas and coal reserves, which is a huge energy supplier across both Eastern and Western Europe. If those industries get destabilized during this conflict, the U.S. will likely be called on to ship massive quantities of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) quickly to ports across Europe. International shipping is still a mess from COVID, and its still wintertime there with bitter cold, so millions of Europeans will need energy access right away. This could potentially lead to a huge demand for imports from North America, causing a surge here and a rush to deliver that may not be achievable.”

Ask Joel Burcat:

  • What’s the latest intel on Ukrainian natural gas and coal?
  • What could potentially happen globally as a daisy-chain effect if Ukrainian and Russian energy exports get destabilized or cut off from supplying energy across Europe
  • His family’s story of leaving Ukraine and joining millions of others in the early 20th century in coming to America to search for a better life
