The Adventures of Penny and Tubs (The Mystery of the Crystal Waterfall) by Marcie May and Margaret Zerhusen is a fun children’s book about a young girl named Penny and her cat, Tubs. They are going on a trip to Hawaii and are both very excited. When they get there, the hotel has a luau. At the luau, one of the people who works at the hotel tells the legend of the Crystal Waterfall. The Crystal Waterfall is said to have the power to grant a wish to anyone who can see their reflection, but the waterfall is guarded by a beast. One day, Penny and Tubs follow a cat named Sissy Hunna and stumble upon the Crystal Waterfall, but then they hear a loud, scary noise. What will happen to them?
I really enjoyed reading The Adventures of Penny and Tubs by Marcie May and Margaret Zerhusen. The book is very well written and descriptive. The book is full of action and has many exciting parts. Penny and Tubs are likeable characters, because they are kind and brave. I liked that the book teaches about Hawaii, and about Hawaiian customs, and Hawaiian words. The pictures by Ashley Teets are very well drawn and clearly depict each scene. The pictures are also very colorful and bold. Parents will enjoy reading this book to their child, and children will want to read it again and again. This book would be great if someone were planning a vacation to Hawaii. I would definitely recommend this book to all young readers.
