New England Book Festival Honorable Mention Best Fiction
The year is 1918, and American troops are pouring into France, seeking to tip the balance of WWI in the Allies’ favor. Charlie Carter, soon-to-be son-in-law of Western legend and rodeo star See Bird, AKA Red Carpenter, is among them. But Carter is one of a new breed of warriors, those who fight from the skies aboard the new invention, the airplane. In these frail and flimsy crafts, Charlie and other young men like him seek to take the fight to the German invaders. When his initial excitement wears off, Charlie discovers that death is always his worst enemy. Based on a true person, this is the story of Charlie’s wings.
