A trip to New York City, for Colonel Zack Kelly, is more than an opportunity to bond with his daughter, Laura.  It’s a chance to find out what happened to his father, an NYPD cop shot down and killed by drug dealers, then branded a dirty cop some thirty years before. Someone doesn’t want Zack to learn the truth of his father’s past and Zack suspects the corruption his father was investigating may have reached as high as the New York City Police Commissioner. Zack’s long-time friend is visiting New York from her home in Ireland and accompanies Zack to see the leader of the New York organized crime family, who may be able to provide information about his father.

A hijacking aboard the Staten Island Ferry and a plot by a group of ex-military called the Forgotten Warriors to take over the Alamo in San Antonio both seem to be intertwined, leading Zack on the longest walk of his life. And it may not even lead him home.

What People Say

Long Walk Home is a bruising and blistering thriller, coolly reminiscent of Nelson DeMille at his best. Don Helin’s emotionally-wrought, angst-riddled, morality play is ever true to its title, making it a wondrous and tortuous tale of one man’s descent to hell and heroic climb out of it. A mystery of rare depth, pathos, and conviction.”—Jon Land, USA Today bestselling author of Strong to the Bone

  1. Divine Zape for Readers’ Favorite

Long Walk Home by Don Helin is an exciting thriller full of action, intrigue, and a smidgen of mystery that’s altogether riveting, as it follows an unusual character in his quest for the truth about his father’s death. It’s been thirty years since Colonel Zack Kelly’s father, who was an NYPD cop, was shot and killed by drug dealers. While on a trip to New York City, the Colonel is looking forward to meeting his daughter, Laura, and investigating his father’s death, a man who had been branded a dirty cop. But things don’t turn out to be as simple as he had thought and he soon finds himself embroiled in a network of corruption that may go as high up as the New York City Police Commissioner. It won’t be long before Zack and his friend, who tries to offer help, find themselves in very tight and dangerous spots, and what has the ex-military group called the Forgotten Warriors to do with all this?

Don Helin has written an unpredictable and compulsively readable story that will have readers on the edge of their seats, blending sleuth with mystery and creating an exciting romp that is irresistible. I enjoyed the fact that the story is balanced, original, and fast-paced. The characters are well developed, written with good backstory and very likeable. The author creates a sense of urgency in the narrative that pushes the reader to watch out for their favorite character. Its fast action coupled with the realism in the narrative make Long Walk Home a hard to put down story. It’s an interesting and enjoyable read.
